However, I'd like to take this opportunity to do so.

I want to let you know that on Monday, March 1, I finished my doctoral degree. I tell you this only because a great deal of the credit for my accomplishing this belongs to you and your children.

I moved my family to this community almost seventeen years ago. At that time I had no clue how my heart and our lives would be filled by the families in our school and our towns. We came and were instantly drawn in by open arms, my husband passed away and those arms surrounded us with care and concern. My children celebrated their young lives with your children, and learned from some of the finest people I know, both in and out of school.

It pains me greatly when someone says, "What do you expect? I went to North Greene." I know it is "a joke", but I have gone to North Greene for the past sixteen years. I chose to raise my children at North Greene. I learned so much from North Greene. I have learned much about what honor, trust, and dedication mean to the families here. I have learned that parents love their children even when they might not have all the "things" to give them. They give them love. I have watched these children show a depth of compassion for someone struggling that most people would never understand.

Your kids have some things that no one will ever be able to take from them:
1. drive - there is nothing our kids can't do when they put their minds to it
2. humor - I laugh every single day at something they say or do
3. encouragement - when someone struggles our kids get behind each other and push
4. compassion - they really do understand the trials of other people
5. intelligence - we have very smart kids, just ask me
6. fortitude - so bad things happen, I can rise above it

I promise these are the qualities that made me believe I could do it. Your children are the example that kept me going. I thank you and I thank them. If there is ever any thing I can do...

Dr. Cindy Carlson-Rice

Oh, here are some pictures of your kids!

Dr. Cindy S. After the Thanksgiving break we came back to the excitement of a regional win for the 7th grade girl's basketball team. We wanted to do something special to send them off for their sectional competition, so we had a pep rally. We made some great memories, thanks to these wonderful girls, and laughed until we almost cried. Several students attended WIVC chorus festival at Western Illinois University while....
2. Many others participated in IESA state literary contest, at the same time....
3. Our basketball girls were participating in the Athens tournament, and.....
4. Our boys were playing ball somewhere else

Needless to say, our students had a really good time.

Just this past Saturday our 8th grade boys won the Winchester Tournament, and our girls had a nail biter game earlier in the week.

We are doing some great things educationally too:
The 8th graders just finished up their cross curricular unit on the Holocaust. They will be making a trip to the Holocaust Museum in St. Louis to finish up their study. It has been an amazing experience for the kids. Check out Mrs. Rhoades blog for more info.

Our 4th graders have been studying simple machines, and they made their own marble
contraptions with said machines. Baseball is about to wind down. We have had a great season against some giant teams. Our regional game will be played tomorrow at 10:00 in Bunker Hill.

2. Our open house was last night and was extremely well attended. I love to be able to use the school reach system to communicate with all of you. Thank you so much for coming and seeing all of us.

3. Isn't it amazing that we are already practicing for basketball. Our first home came is Monday!

4. Watch for progress reports on Friday, the 25th.

5. Record numbers of kids have opted to participate in speech/literary contest this fall. Our future actors and actresses are amazing me all the time.

6. Kids who want to participate in band for the first time will be able to pick an instrument on September 29.

7. Such exciting things are happening in the classrooms. We haven't all gotten our blogs up to date, but we'll be working on it very soon.

8. The planner police started today. Only about 5 students did not have their planners filled out. It was really a lot of fun, and it is so important that our students fill out their planners and you check them. Thanks, it helps our kids learn to be organized.

9. Once a week I am able to take four students out for breakfast. It isn't always the student with the best grades, but sometimes it is. It isn't always the top athlete, but sometimes it is. It is a student the staff recognizes as either able to benefit from a little special attention or is a unique kid, or .....

10. This place is such an exciting place to be. Kids are happy, faculty is happy and I'm happy. We have much to be excited about and lots of things to look forward to.

Our staff changed over the past couple of years. We certainly will miss our retired teachers, but look very forward to welcoming the teachers new to our building.

I just wanted to say welcome, and welcome back. I'll be explaining more over the next couple of days, so check back.

Mrs. Carlson RiceDr. Cindy S. C. All materials in the baskets were donated or purchased by students at a particular grade level, or were donated by community friends.

Chances can be purchased either from North Greene Middle School (Roodhouse) students, or at the school during basketball games. The chances cost $.50 or 3 for $1.00.

Our first lovely basket follows a "Movie/DVD" theme and has all the goodies necessary for a cold winter evening of popcorn and entertainment. This basket was designed and gathered by our 4th grade students.
The basket collected by the 8th grade students is centered on a "Candle Theme". (I'm too forgetful).

One of the most exciting things was the breakfast for "Those Who Excel" on the ISAT. A large number of students and parents were able to come together to celebrate the success of our students on the state assessment. It is one of my most favorite days of the year. We are all so proud of all our students, but it is especially nice to be able to recognize them in this way.

This week our Student Council is sponsoring "Say No To Drugs" week. We had three guest speakers who talked with us about the dangers of drugs and what to do to avoid being hurt.

For the remainder of the week we will be doing a variety of things to show our resistance to drugs. Today was wear red day, and each student had the opportunity to decorate a brick to build a wall against drugs. Tomorrow is "turn your back on drugs" and the students will be able to wear their clothes backwards. Wednesday is "sock it to drugs" and "shade out drugs". The students can wear crazy socks and their sunglasses. On Thursday it's "hats off to drugs" and "drug free, no sweat". Wear a hat or sweats. The week will finish up with "Smarties Don't Do Drugs" and the students will get smarties at lunch. It should be a great week.

Report cards come home on Friday. If your child is not doing well please ask them first what they think the issue is, but don't hesitate to call the teacher and ask for an appointment. Together, hopefully, we can encourage our kids to do their best. If your child is doing well make sure to reinforce that in the best way possible, with praise! Kids love it when they know you are proud of them.

If you ever have any questions don't hesitate to contact us. We are sooooo glad your kids are here.
Dr. Cindy S. There are some things that can make it easier.

We spend a great deal of time at NGMS trying to build a community where the students are supportive of each other and feel important in their own right. I have included a couple of web sites that explain some of the issues of Middle School aggression. Please discuss these issues with your child. We certainly hope to make the years here at NGMS good for your son or daughter. The more we work together the better things can be for your child.

Thanks, and let me know what you think and feel about this issue.

Mrs. C. At the end of the month the slips from the bulletin board will be put together for a drawing and a prize will be given to the student chosen.

We also have rewards for good behavior at the end of each quarter and each month. Some of it you'll be familiar with and some things will be new. Let me explain.

I am now Mrs. Rice. I was married to Charlie Rice, a retired engineer from ACH, in April of last year. He is not very good at staying home and being retired, so he is substitute teaching at North Greene High School in Industrial Arts. If the children have a hard time remembering to call me Mrs. Rice I don't mind still being called Mrs. Carlson. As a matter of fact I kept Carlson as my middle name.

Probably the biggest excitement around here, at this immediate time, is our embracing of technology for your children. We are learning new things every day and can't wait to share them with you. Attached to this post you will find the blog pages for our staff. If you click on the link your child's teacher probably has their blog constructed and has information to share with you. We welcome constructive comments and encourage you to ask questions. Please, however, remember that we are new to this and it may be a little rough at first. Your children all have the blog addresses of their teachers and are encouraged to visit on a regular basis.

We believe that, in this time, our children will do little that does not require creativity and the ability to think beyond simple answers. In order to teach these things in a manner that will enable them to participate in a world that is becoming smaller and smaller we will be utilizing the technology that is available to us. You may see a post constructed by your child and some classmates. You may see a DVD your child is a huge part of. We will be asking your child to use a computer and if you do not have one available at home we will make sure there is one here to use.

We are very excited about this school year. Please come visit us, or look us up on the web at www.ngmsrice1.blogspot.com.

Mrs. Cindy Carlson RiceDr. Cindy S. C.
